Allariz, a medieval gem in the Vía de la Plata

Enjoy your stay in a privileged rural setting

The Hotel Oca Vila de Allariz is a beautiful 4 star hotel located in the town of Allariz, province of Ourense. A gem of medieval times that still retains much of its charm thanks to the great effort made by the town for the conservation and restoration of its heritage. These tasks were recognized with the European Prize for Urbanism, their inclusion in the catalog of good practices of the UN and the designation of Biosphere Reserve in 2005.

Allariz, which owes its name to the King Suevo Alaric who repopulated these lands in the 6th century, was on several occasions the capital of the Kingdom of Galicia and seat of the Court of Castile during the Middle Ages, obtaining even the title of Chave do Reino de Galicia (Key of the Kingdom of Galicia). A story that has left an important imprint in the town and that is still visible today in its streets that mix religious, military and civil architecture in a landscape of great beauty on the banks of the Arnoia River.

The town is also part of the Vía de la Plata on its way to Ourense. Years of pilgrimage through the town of Allariz have left an imprint that is very visible in the affable character of its locals. The way of the Camino de Santiago by Allariz is recognized by pilgrims for its great landscape beauty that runs along paths of great vegetation. A few kilometers from the exit of Allariz, you will find the beautiful monumental complex of Aguas Santas, composed of the Church of Santa Mariña, the Fort of Armeá and the unfinished Basilica de la Ascension. The Southern step finally joins the Northern that runs from the town of Xunqueira de Ambía in the town of As Pereiras, to make its final entry into the city of Ourense.

Spots of interest in Allariz

Walking around Allariz discovering the reflections of the past is a really interesting activity. During your stay, you cannot miss the area known as the Campo da Barreira. It is an open space limited to the north by the old town wall and where a beautiful Baroque fountain by Ferro Caaveiro, the Church of San Benito and the Royal Convent of Santa Clara are located, the latter was founded in 1268 by the wife of Alfonso X, called the Wise.

If you visit Allariz you cannot go back without visiting the recovered banks of the Arnoia. A beautiful ethnographic park with three fundamental pieces: the Muiño do Burato, the Tecido Museum O Fiadeiro and the Museo do Coiro. A wooden bridge connects both banks of the river and allows visitors to enjoy this area, that received the European Urbanism Prize in 1994. The Aser Seara Iconographic Museum and the Vicente Risco Museum House are two other museums in the town that you should not miss. The first hosts a fantastic collection of sacred art with Romanesque, Gothic and Baroque images, while the second is a tribute to the Galician writer Vicente Risco.

Finally, end your visit to Allariz discovering the bridge and church of Santa María de Vilanova. Two Romanesque constructions of the XII century. And going up to the Penedo da Vela and its castle. It is the place where the disappeared castle of the village was located and from where you can get an exceptional panoramic view of the entire village and its surroundings.
